About the museum

The German Ski Museum belongs to the German Ski Association (DSV), which is headquartered in the “Haus des Ski” on the market square in Planegg, west of Munich. The current exhibition has been open to the public since summer 2002; the museum is recognised as a ski museum by the International Ski Federation FIS and holds one of the most important collections on the history of skiing.

Original objects, historical photographs and rare ski films trace the development from the first skis several millennia ago to the present. Thematic focuses include skiing among children and women, skis as a working tool, military skiing, ski making, ski tourism and competitive sport.

A separate section is devoted to the more than hundred-year history of German skiing, including the separate development in East and West between 1945 and 1990. Since 2007, departments on biathlon – with a laser shooting range to try out – and on the diversity of skiing today have complemented the exhibition.

The museum can only be visited by prior appointment; no admission is charged. Themed tours and museum education programmes are available on request.
