About the museum

The museum goes back to archaeological finds in and around Germering. The Archäologischer Verein Germering (Germering Archaeological Association) wanted to preserve the finds and show them to the public, and for years it pushed the idea of a town museum. It is housed in the former fire station next to the town hall, which was extensively converted for museum use. The permanent exhibition opened on September 14, 2014.

The exhibition follows settlement on the edge of the Munich gravel plain, from a Mesolithic resting place through graves and wells of the Stone and Bronze Ages, finds from the Iron Age and the Roman Imperial period, and a late antique woman's grave, to the Early Middle Ages and modern times. A film presents the village church of St. Martin. Museum units and panels spread across the town form the museum trails.

The building also houses the city archive and city archaeology. The Förderverein Stadtmuseum Germering e.V. (Friends of the Germering Town Museum) looks after museum operations, offers events, and supports its expansion; there are changing special exhibitions, lectures, and a museum shop with publications, postcards, and replicas.
