About the museum
The Heimat- und Buddelmuseum is housed in the Museum Alte Rektorschule (old rector's school) in Osten on the Oste river. Alongside the Heimatstube (local room) with household items, tools and furniture from the region, the building includes a historic forge and a wedding room.
The special feature is the bottle collection: over 35 years, Jan and Annemarie ten Doornkaat gathered around 4,500 bottles and vessels for alcoholic drinks from all over the world, notable for their figural decoration in many materials and techniques. The local history section also shows hunting and fishing trophies, objects from trade and commerce, and old forging tools; on special occasions, a blacksmith demonstrates his craft.
