Museum in the cloister of the Brandenburg Cathedral with a medieval textile treasury, Gothic altarpieces and the Hungertuch (Lenten veil) of about 1290.
The artists Mersud Selman and Taha Bader approach the theme of Mary independently of each other: Selman takes up Michelangelo's Pietà, while Bader presents the cycle “Muttersprache” on the joy of motherhood.
Altars, sculptures, vestments and pictorial evidence from the cathedral treasury show the many roles of Mary in cultural and devotional history and her significance for Brandenburg Cathedral.
About the museum
The Brandenburg Cathedral Chapter goes back to the founding of the diocese in the 10th century and is linked to the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul on the Cathedral Island, whose 850th anniversary was celebrated in 2015. Over the centuries a treasure of artworks, documents, books and liturgical vestments accumulated here, which today forms the core of the Cathedral Museum.
The museum uses the historic cathedral cloister, especially the north cloister with its cloister walk. Some unrenovated rooms are also included in the presentation. Shown are Gothic altarpieces and sculptures that recall the once rich furnishings of the cathedral.
The textile treasury is particularly significant: around 120 vestments from the 11th to the 19th century, most of them from the 15th century, were worn in the cathedral during services. The oldest piece is the Brandenburg Hungertuch, embroidered around 1290, which tells the life of Christ on a surface of about two by four meters. The cathedral chapter also takes care of the conservation and restoration of the textiles and shows them in changing exhibitions. The museum is generally open from May to October.
