Heimatmuseum Eltze
Village museum of the Heimatverein in the former Catholic church of St. Petrus in Eltze (Uetze) – visits by arrangement.
About the museum
After the Second World War, numerous Catholic refugees and displaced persons settled in Eltze, which had been Protestant since the Reformation. For them, the small church of St. Petrus was built in 1959 to plans by an architect from Paderborn, with a free-standing bell tower and an entrance door showing scenes from the life of the apostle. In 1999 the last Mass was celebrated there.
The Heimatverein Eltze (local heritage association), founded in 1980, acquired the deconsecrated building and opened its local history museum in it in spring 2000. The exterior of the church is almost unchanged to this day; one of the bells still tolls when a Catholic resident of the village dies.
On about 200 square meters, the association documents the local history. On display are a 19th-century shoemaker's workshop, a loom about 150 years old with a spinning wheel and clothing, ceramics and tableware, sewing and typewriters, kitchen and living room furnishings, Stone Age tools, and the complete shop furnishings of a merchant from 1921. Documents, flags, coats of arms, and photos form a local documentation going back to the year 1226.
