About the museum
The Dorfmuseum Mertingen consists of three historic buildings that the Museumsfreunde Mertingen (Mertingen Museum Friends) have restored and furnished over many years, largely with their own funds. The first was the Museumsstadel (Hilaria-Lechner-Straße 13), an agricultural outbuilding built in 1899, opened in 1984. In 1989 the Sölde (Mardostraße 10), a small farmhouse from 1883, followed, and in 1994 the Alte Schule (Fuggerstraße 3), a schoolhouse from 1857 where lessons were taught until 1912.
The collection comprises around 8,000 exhibits from household and farming, crafts and trade, faith and customs. The Stadel displays farm machinery and tools, carriages, bicycles and sleds, workshops of village craftsmen, and a still working church tower clock from 1898. The Sölde contains a parlor, kitchen, bedroom, a general store and a traditional costume room.
The Alte Schule houses a classroom from around 1900, craftsmen's rooms, and a permanent exhibition on prehistoric, early historic and Roman finds, including a diorama of the Roman fort on the Burgberg. Demonstrations such as sauerkraut making, butter churning, cider pressing or threshing with a flail keep old working techniques alive.
