About the museum
The Dorfmuseum Oedelsheim is housed in a half-timbered house from 1656 in the Diemelsaxon style, a gable-end, three-aisled post-frame building. In the 1990s the building was renovated with state funds and private initiative; the house and outbuildings, such as the bake house, still clearly show the original structures with infill panels and clay ceilings. The permanent exhibition has been on view since spring 1996. The museum is run by the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Oedelsheim (local heritage and tourism association).
Across roughly 160 square meters and three floors, about 650 exhibits are on display. They tell of local history, traditional crafts, textile production in a dedicated weaving room, and rafting and shipping on the Weser, which were once economically important for the village. A separate section preserves the heritage of the Sudeten German expellees who found a new home in Oedelsheim in 1946.
The building is also a meeting point for clubs, the archive and the municipal registry office. The museum operates under the motto “Der gestiefelte Kater” (Puss in Boots); special exhibitions are held every year, along with several museum festivals where the museum garden invites visitors to relax with games, food and drinks.
