About the museum
The Schäferhaus Museum was established in 1981 by a citizens' initiative against the demolition of the municipality's more than 200-year-old shepherd's house. The small half-timbered building on the Lippoldsberg Schäferhof is the last originally surviving day laborer's house in the village. The museum is run by the association Museum & Werkstatt im Schäferhaus.
The permanent exhibition focuses on rural life in the 20th century, shown through a village pub, a colonial goods shop, a bakery, and a kitchen and "good parlor" (gute Stube). The small tavern also serves as a meeting room. In the garden are a traditional bake house, a forge and a shepherd's cart; special exhibitions usually take place on the upper floor.
Over more than four decades, the association has organized exhibitions, lectures and discussion evenings on the village's food, construction, energy and clothing history, and has examined village crafts, local industry and club life. Political questions are explicitly part of this work, for example in the exhibition on National Socialism in Lippoldsberg.
