About the museum
Gieselwerder was a boatmen's village: at its peak, more than 200 people from the village worked as captains, helmsmen, sailors or engineers, and shipping has been documented here in writing since the end of the 16th century. Rafters also shaped the village; its last commercial raft went down the Weser in 1964.
The Schiffermuseum was set up in 2010 in rooms of the former school and is run by volunteers. The collection now comprises well over a thousand objects, including ship models of paddle steamers, tugboats and passenger ships, models of shipyards and harbor facilities, shipping company flags, rope making, tools and nautical instruments. An original wheelhouse lets visitors stand at the wheel themselves.
In the annex stands a ship's diesel engine from 1954 with 480 hp, weighing almost ten tons. It never ran on a ship; for decades it worked as the power generator of a barracks. The museum took it over in 2013 and built a hall for it. The grounds also hold an old fishing boat and a dinghy.
