Theodor-Storm-Haus
Theodor Storm's home in Husum with original rooms, the desk where he wrote “Der Schimmelreiter,” and an exhibition on the poet's life and work.
About the museum
The merchant's house on Husum's Wasserreihe was built around 1730 and has 14 rooms. The staircase, hallways, ceilings, and doors still date from the time of construction or from the years when Theodor Storm lived here. The poet lived in the house with his family from 1866 to 1880, while working in his hometown as Landvogt (district governor) and later as a district judge.
Today the building is the seat of the Theodor-Storm-Gesellschaft (Theodor Storm Society), which runs the museum here as well as a research library and the Storm archive with manuscripts, letters, and pictures; since 2006 these areas have been combined in the Storm-Zentrum. Visitors can see, among other things, the former district governor's office, the family's living room, and the small study that Storm called his “Poetenstübchen” (poet's den).
For the poet's 200th birthday in 2017, the presentation was redesigned: one exhibition is devoted to his life and work, and a separate room with an audio station to his most famous novella, Der Schimmelreiter (The Rider on the White Horse). Among the most valuable pieces are the desk at which Storm completed this novella, whose owl carvings were made by the young Emil Nolde, and the family's square piano.
