About the museum

The museum belongs to the Harzklub local branch of Bad Harzburg and is housed in the listed carriage house of the former Oberforstamt Harzburg (senior forestry office), directly next to the town hall. Since 1994 historically significant objects from the town and its surroundings have been shown here, and the collection continues to grow.

In 2001 the Burgbergzimmer was added; it was designed by the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum and presents excavation finds from the old Harzburg on the Burgberg. Since this expansion, the house has borne the name "Museum in der Remise".

Spread over several rooms, the exhibition also shows the town's history and the mining of the region, a mineral and fossil cabinet with rocks and fossils from the Harz and the Jurassic deposits, mementos from Schreiberhau in the Riesengebirge, the partner town (Patenstadt) of Bad Harzburg, everyday objects around 1900, a household room, and a document room with certificates and pictures.
