Energie-Museum Berlin
Volunteer-run collection on the technology of Berlin's electricity and heat supply – currently closed due to relocation.
About the museum
The museum grew out of an initiative by employees and retirees of Bewag, Berlin's former energy utility: 30 of them founded a support association on May 10, 2001, which collects, restores and displays historic plant components and equipment from electricity and heat supply. All members work as volunteers, and the work is financed by donations; Stromnetz Berlin GmbH is a supporter.
Until 2026 the exhibition was located in a building at the Steglitz substation on the Teltow Canal in Lankwitz. There, in the 1980s, Bewag had installed a battery storage facility that was for a time the largest of its kind in the world: it stabilized the frequency of what was then the isolated West Berlin power grid and served as an instant reserve until it was decommissioned at the end of 1994.
On around 1,800 square meters over four floors, the association displayed exhibits from nine specialist areas – from power plant, grid, metering and protection technology to communications engineering and occupational safety, household appliances and public lighting, plus a model of a combined-cycle gas and steam power plant. Visits were only possible with a guided tour. Because the site had to be vacated by the end of March 2026, museum operations are suspended until the collection is accessible again at a new location.
