Erich-Ohser-Haus
Art museum in Plauen on the life and work of the draftsman Erich Ohser, alias e.o.plauen, creator of the picture stories "Father and Son" ("Vater und Sohn").
About the museum
The Galerie e.o.plauen was established in 1993 as a joint project of the cities of Plauen and Siegen, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and Salamander AG. With the support of Christian Ohser, the artist's son, the first exhibition opened on October 3, 1993 on Plauen's Bahnhofstraße.
The museum is dedicated to the draftsman Erich Ohser (1903–1944), who grew up in Plauen and became known under the pen name e.o.plauen for the picture stories "Father and Son". In 1999 the decision was made for a permanent exhibition whose areas of work change regularly. This concept was retained when the gallery moved in 2010 into the Erich-Ohser-Haus on Nobelstraße next to the Vogtlandmuseum. Since then, a Father and Son monument by sculptor Erik Seidel has stood in front of the building.
On four levels, the museum shows, in a half-yearly rotation, the picture stories, landscapes, portraits, nudes and movement studies, political caricatures and humorous drawings as well as photographs, documents and furniture designed by Ohser; a film about the artist runs continuously. The Erich Ohser – e.o.plauen Foundation and the e.o.plauen Society, which awards the e.o.plauen Prize for humor in drawing and literature, are also based in the building.
