Schaustickerei Plauen
Living factory museum in Plauen: in an embroidery works from 1902, historic large embroidery machines for Plauen lace run during guided tours.
About the museum
The ensemble in Plauen’s Reusa district dates from around the turn of the 20th century, the heyday of the Vogtland lace and embroidery industry. The villa was built first, in 1897; in 1902 Albert Schiller added a single-story courtyard building for ten embroidery machines, its layout following the workflow of the time.
The business embroidered for almost a century and did not close until 1996. Because the buildings and machines had survived largely in their original state, the complex was listed as a cultural monument. The association Verein Vogtländische Textilgeschichte Plauen rescued the embroidery works, had it restored, and took it over as a museum in December 2001.
Since then, association members have demonstrated how lace is made on large and small embroidery machines from around 1900, and explained the interplay between the embroidery industry and mechanical engineering, for example the Vogtländische Maschinenfabrik VOMAG. The collection also includes tools, designs, pattern books, and numerous laces and embroideries. Using designs from old pattern books, the Schaustickerei recreates tulle lace from the 1920s and 1930s and sells it in the museum shop.
