For the 200th anniversary of photography, the exhibition links photographic history with Plauen: at its centre is the worker photographer Walter Ballhause, alongside amateur photography by the FotoClub Vogtland and historical cameras.
About the museum
The first part of the building on Bleichstraße was erected in the late 1770s for the calico printer Johann August Neumeister and is considered one of the early manufactory buildings in Saxony. Later a mechanical cotton-spinning mill and further extensions were added, making complex production chains possible; in 1858 a steam engine started running here. The late Baroque complex, reminiscent of a town palace, is now regarded as the most significant surviving manufactory building in the area.
Its present name, "Weisbachsches Haus", dates from when the Weisbach family took over the ensemble in 1897. In 2015 the building passed to the city of Plauen, which from 2017 converted it into the "Deutsches Forum für Textil und Spitze" (German Forum for Textiles and Lace). The Fabrik der Fäden opened in 2023.
Across more than 1,000 square meters, the permanent exhibition tells the story of the Vogtland textile and lace industry, from the famous Plauen lace to today's and future production, and also focuses on the people behind it. Multimedia stations invite visitors to try things out. There are also a 220-square-meter special exhibition area and an open storage room (Schaudepot) displaying the collection.
