About the museum
The museum stands at the foot of the Schlossturm in a listed building that once served as the administration building of the Rittergut (manor estate). A modern extension enlarged the building; in 1997 the new permanent exhibition opened there.
On display are more than 1000 objects on the history of the castle and the town, as well as guilds, the postal service, associations, mining and industry. In 2013 a section on flight, expulsion and new beginnings for the expellees (Heimatvertriebene) in the Saxon Vogtland was added, which has drawn attention beyond the region. Since autumn 2022, visitors can also see a reconstructed GDR-era new-build apartment in the style of the 1980s on the top floor, with living room, kitchen, children's room and a bathroom built to a 1:1 scale.
In the medieval barrel vault beneath the building are a mineral collection and mining models. Outdoors, the Garden of Stone Witnesses (Steinerner Zeitzeugen) displays memorial stones and objects from the GDR era as well as stone finds from the Vogtland. In 2021 the building was certified as a family-friendly leisure facility.
