About the museum
The Obbornhofen local heritage society was founded on July 21, 1967, after the celebrations for the village's 1,200th anniversary. It wanted to preserve the village life of the past with exhibits and small brochures, as that life was changing quickly with the mechanization of farming.
The museum is housed in the former school, which later served as the community hall and provided housing for people in difficult circumstances. The city of Hungen handed the richly decorated half-timbered house over to the society in 1980, and the museum opened in 1981. The complex also includes the Old Town Hall from around 1550, the oldest half-timbered town hall in the Gießen district, which the society has used since 1992, including for temporary exhibitions. Since 2008, civil marriage ceremonies have also been held in its wedding room.
About 2,700 exhibits, mostly donated by people from the village, show rural domestic life, farming, village crafts and mining, and tell the story of life in the village around 1900. A digital village trail with QR signs at historic buildings complements the museum.
