About the museum
The Museum Fridericianum in Laubach opened in 1981 as a local history museum. The Heimatkundlicher Arbeitskreis (local history working group), which had come together in 1978 as the backer of the museum idea of its later founder, still runs the house today; the town of Laubach provided the building. From 2007 the exhibition was reorganized into a clearly structured regional museum focusing on the Laubach region and its people.
The building itself is special. Around 1750, Count Christian August of Laubach had a hunting lodge built three kilometers away in Gonterskirchen. In 1832 a count's court councillor acquired it and moved it to its present site in Laubach. From 1875 to 1922 a grammar school was housed here. It was named after its founder, Count Friedrich, as the "Fridericianum", a name that stayed with the building. The high staircase to the street had to make way for traffic, so today visitors enter the house from the back. The half-timbering was uncovered in 1980/81, and since 2010 the building has been plastered again.
The ground floor leads through the history from prehistoric settlement to the consolidated municipality of Laubach in the 1970s. The first floor is devoted to church and school as well as work and trades, and the upper floor to old associations and personalities of the town.
