About the museum

The half-timbered house on Leipheim's Stadtberg was built in 1647 as a brewhouse on older foundations; the associated brewery barn is even older. For generations, beer was brewed and served here, first under the name "Schlachtwirt," later as the "Blaue Ente" inn. The tavern closed in the 1970s, and the property fell increasingly into disrepair. Today the house is part of the listed ensemble around Leipheim's Schlosshof and has, among other things, two deep cellars and a gable fountain.

The town of Leipheim acquired the building in 1997. Members of the Historischer Arbeitskreis (historical working group) – mostly retirees with practical skills – restored the house and barn in about eight years of volunteer work. The exhibition concept was developed together with an ethnologist, and the Heimat- und Bauernkriegsmuseum (local history and Peasants' War museum) opened in 2005.

In the barn, the Peasants' War takes center stage: in 1525, one of the first battles of this war was fought near Leipheim. The exhibition leads from the social background through a battle diorama to the consequences, including a re-created grave with skeletons from that period, and explains the Twelve Articles of the peasants. The old building is devoted to local history – from the Lords of Güssen and the Hospital Foundation through the long period as a Protestant enclave to the air base. The old taproom with its house brewery has been restored; an exhibition building in the Weinhof shows the technology of Leipheim's former mills.
