About the museum

Around 1350, under the impression of the Great Plague, a noble benefactor established a hospital on the Heerstraße (main road) in Aub. Initially intended for the poor, the sick and pilgrims, the regional hospital served as a welfare institution for more than 600 years and offered people a secure retirement. It was the largest regional hospital of the former Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. The complex on the edge of the old town includes the Gothic hospital church, the early modern residents' and administrator's building, and an enclosed courtyard.

From 1998, citizens of the small town collected donations to restore the hospital church, after which a museum concept was developed. Since 2004, the museum has been run by volunteers in the Würzburg district and now has 33 stations on 1,500 square meters.

The exhibition introduces the idea of the hospital through the "Seven Works of Mercy"; wooden silhouettes of residents, a maid, the hospital master or a cook tell of everyday life. The hospital barn shows the economy of the hospital, and the preserved hospital archive holds inventories and accounts from the 16th to the 20th century. In the courtyard, the hospital stage (2006) and a herb garden (2008) complement the offerings.
