Fritz-Reuter-Literaturmuseum
Literature museum in the birthplace of Fritz Reuter, the old town hall of Stavenhagen, on the life and work of the Low German poet.
About the museum
The museum is housed in the former town hall on the market square of Stavenhagen, built between 1785 and 1788. Fritz Reuter was born in this house; his father served for almost four decades as mayor and town judge and lived in the building with his family.
For the poet's 100th birthday in 1910, a first Reuter room was set up. The museum was founded in 1949 and expanded in 1954. After the town administration moved out around 1960, the whole house was available for exhibitions, and in the 1970s significant Reuter holdings came from Neubrandenburg to Stavenhagen.
In 2001 the building was completely renovated and the exhibition redesigned. Today the permanent exhibition shows the life, work and influence of the Low German storyteller with manuscripts, letters, first editions, paintings and personal belongings; another exhibition is dedicated to the Stavenhagen painter and illustrator Ernst Lübbert. The manuscript archive, a specialist library of about 15,000 volumes and the Historical Town Archive also make the house a research site. The museum is run by the town of Stavenhagen; since October 2022 Torsten Jahn has directed the museum, which also houses the town's tourist information office.
