Uns lütt Museum

Volunteer-run local history and everyday life museum in the former monastery guesthouse in Dargun, with 17 rooms on about 2,000 m².

Opening hoursAdmission €3.50

About the museum

The foundation was laid during the political upheaval of 1990/91, when a schoolteacher and her pupils rescued many everyday objects from the rubbish. More and more residents of Dargun and the surrounding villages took part, and the town made four rooms in the town hall cellar available. Because the rooms were small, the 23 founding members of the museum association gave the house its Low German (Plattdeutsch) name "Uns lütt Museum" (roughly "Our Little Museum"). The association has run the museum entirely on a volunteer basis since 1993.

As the collection grew, the town gave the association the former guesthouse of the monastery. With funding from the town and the state, it was renovated and opened as a museum in 1996, directly beside the monastery and castle complex. Today the house presents everyday regional history across 17 rooms covering about 2,000 square meters, as well as in the outdoor grounds.

Themes include living rooms around 1900; craft workshops such as the wheelwright's, smithy, shoemaker's and rope-maker's; a threshing barn with farm machinery and horse teams; rooms on forestry, water and meadows, on the railway and medicine, on flight and expulsion in 1945, and on 800 years of the Dargun monastery.
