Retrospective of the paper sculptor and main fellow of the 2nd paper art fellowship, with works from a good two decades and two large-scale installations created specifically for the gallery space.
Works by the three emerging-artist fellows Aleida van Dijk, Rodrigo Arteaga, and Kuan Lin Chen, who use paper as material, image support, and object of research; on view in the Galerie im Kameralamt.
Original storyboards, sketches, and more than 150 hand-painted cels from a US private collection offer insight into the making of the animated series, complemented by hands-on stations.
About the museum
Galerie Stihl Waiblingen opened in May 2008 as a municipal exhibition venue. Its construction was made possible by a major donation from the Eva Mayr-Stihl Stiftung, which the name commemorates; the gallery is run by the town of Waiblingen. In terms of content, it is devoted to a focus that is rare in Germany: works on and made of paper, from historical prints to drawing and caricature to large-scale installations.
Stuttgart architect Hartwig N. Schneider designed the building together with the neighboring Kunstschule Unteres Remstal (art school). Both elliptical structures are clad in translucent industrial glass; inside, a column-free hall of around 500 square meters is reconfigured with movable walls for each show. The ensemble received the Hugo-Häring-Landespreis architecture award in 2012. Since 2009, Olafur Eliasson’s Pavillon für Waiblingen has stood in front of it.
The gallery presents three changing exhibitions a year, which regularly take up themes from popular culture as well. Together with the art school and the Haus der Stadtgeschichte, opened in 2014, it forms a cultural quarter between the town wall and the bank of the Rems. Since 2023, the town has also awarded a fellowship for drawing and paper art, whose results are presented in the gallery and in the Galerie im Kameralamt.
