Beinsteiner Torturm
Late medieval gate tower in Waiblingen with a museum on the tower's history and the Danube Swabians from Csávoly in Hungary; guided tours only.
About the museum
For centuries the Beinsteiner Torturm was part of Waiblingen's town fortifications on the Rems river. A bridge gate on this site is documented as early as 1356, and since 1491 the tower has borne the coat of arms of Count Eberhard im Bart. Locals call it the Säuturm ("sow tower") because pigs were once driven through here down to the Rems.
When the fortifications lost their purpose in the 18th century, the tower was used as a jail. In 1865 it was even slated for demolition but survived, changing its appearance several times: the small bell turret dates from 1745 and the sgraffito on the facade from 1938. In 1924 it became one of the first municipal buildings to be added to the register of historic monuments.
From 1980 to 2012 the tower housed the heritage room of the Hungarian Germans from Csávoly, who found a new home in Waiblingen after World War II. Following a redesign, the town opened a museum here in 2019. As a branch of the Haus der Stadtgeschichte (town history museum), it links the tower's history across four floors with themes such as emigration, expulsion and arrival.
