Garnisonmuseum Ludwigsburg
Association-run museum in the Asperger Torhaus (gatehouse) of 1761 on the history of the Ludwigsburg garrison, the "Swabian Potsdam," from 1736 to 1994.
About the museum
From the 18th century until 1994, Ludwigsburg was one of the most important garrison towns in Württemberg and was therefore nicknamed the "Swabian Potsdam." The Asperger Torhaus was built between 1758 and 1761 to plans by Johann Adam Groß the Younger as the guardroom of the military gate watch and the residence of the gate clerk. The town wall on which it stands served less to defend the town than to keep soldiers from deserting.
The Militärgeschichtliche Gesellschaft Ludwigsburg, a nonprofit association, set up the Garrison Museum in the gatehouse in 2004. This makes the Asperger Torhaus the only one of Ludwigsburg's gatehouses whose present use is linked to its original military purpose. The redesigned permanent exhibition opened on October 5, 2007.
On three levels, the museum shows uniforms, equipment, weapons, documents, plans and models. The first floor with the lecture hall gives an overview of the garrison's eras, a mezzanine is devoted to barracks construction, and on the second floor the exhibition "Soldaten, Regimenter und Kasernen" (Soldiers, Regiments and Barracks) leads through four cabinets from absolutism through the Kingdom of Württemberg and the German Empire to the world wars and the era of the Bundeswehr (German armed forces). The association complements the museum with lectures, barracks walks and special exhibitions.
