About the museum
The Fashion Museum in the Festinbau of Residenzschloss Ludwigsburg displays clothing and fashionable accessories from the Rococo to the 1960s. The collection belongs to the Landesmuseum Württemberg; the presentation also tells a story of beauty, hygiene and everyday life.
The focus is on splendid gowns for women and silk suits for men, as worn at European princely courts in the Rococo. Undergarments such as petticoats, undershirts, lace-up bodices, hoop skirts and stockings, which otherwise remained hidden beneath the glossy outer layer, are also on open display. There are also shoes, hats, handbags, fans, hand-painted buttons, lace trimmings and even a flea trap made of ivory.
Selected pieces by famous fashion designers of the 20th century, from Charles Frederick Worth and Paul Poiret to Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and Issey Miyake, complete the tour of around 150 years of fashion history. An audio guide provides background on the individual garments; an online exhibition on body, fashion and gender complements the offer.
