Ludwigsburg Museum

City museum in the MIK Ludwigsburg: history of the Baroque planned city, its dukes, artists, soldiers and citizens – pay what you want.

Opening hours Wheelchair accessible Café

About the museum

The foundation was laid by the Historischer Verein Ludwigsburg, founded in 1897, which gathered antiquities and works of art and first showed them publicly in 1901. In the following decades the collection moved several times – among other places to the Ruinenbau in the palace garden, to Schloss Favorite and into the Residenzschloss.

After the Second World War, the scattered holdings were brought together again in 1958. From 1978 the museum operated as the Städtisches Museum Ludwigsburg in the cultural center on Rathausplatz. In autumn 2012 it was given the name Ludwigsburg Museum.

Since May 2013 the museum has been located in the MIK (Museum – Information – Kunst) on Eberhardstraße, a converted Baroque building from the first half of the 18th century, which it shares with the tourist information office, the art association and a café.

From around 25,000 collection objects on the cultural history of the city and of Württemberg, the permanent exhibition "300 Jahre – 300 Dinge: Planstadt Ludwigsburg" shows a selection in six themed rooms – from palace construction through the garrison to the citizens' town. It is complemented by changing exhibitions and programs for children and families.
