About the museum
The ernst-may-gesellschaft was founded in 2003 by architects and art historians. One of its statutory aims is a model house with permanent and temporary exhibitions in the Römerstadt estate, which makes the ideas and work of urban planner Ernst May tangible today. In March 2005 the society signed the lease for the terraced house at Im Burgfeld 136.
The house was restored in keeping with its heritage status on a scholarly basis and furnished largely true to the original; in 2009 the work was completed with the exterior plaster. Furniture, color scheme and especially the preserved Frankfurt Kitchen convey a direct impression of the style of New Objectivity. Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky designed the kitchen in 1926 as part of the building program "Das Neue Frankfurt"; on just a few square meters, a fitted kitchen was created that was produced in series.
A visit includes the garden, designed according to plans by Leberecht Migge. An introductory video and information material replace a guided tour, which groups can book separately. A model allotment garden in the Römerstadt II allotment colony, with a standardized garden shed, complements the offering.
