About the museum
The Geological-Mineralogical Collection shows above all finds from the Devonian sea that once covered the Eifel. Fossil plants and animals from the fore-reef, reef-core and back-reef zones come from the area around Hillesheim. In front of the building stands a coral colony block of about three tons, which was found near Berndorf and acquired for the museum with the support of the Lions Club.
The exhibition is divided into four areas: fossils from the Middle Devonian and Triassic, volcanic rocks and minerals from the Tertiary and Quaternary, minerals from Germany, and minerals from around the world. A small archaeological section spans from Roman times to the late Middle Ages.
The modern era is represented by documentation on the urban renewal of Hillesheim. The renewal in the 1980s attracted attention across Europe; Hillesheim was the smallest of the six German example towns in a European urban renewal campaign. The museum is located on Burgstraße and is run by the municipality.
