About the museum

The Georgstor was built around 1672 under Count Salentin Ernst von Manderscheid-Blankenheim, when the fortifications of the valley were extended. It was the westernmost gate of the town: a plain round arch topped by a half-timbered story. In a niche stands a wooden figure of Saint George in knight's attire, which gives the gate its name.

In 1986, the municipality of Blankenheim handed the gate building over to the local carnival enthusiasts, who set up a carnival museum in it around 1990. It is run by the carnival association, which also offers tours through the narrow rooms.

The exhibition documents the town's Fastnacht (carnival) tradition, which can be traced back to 1613, with documents, pictures, posters and costumes. One focus is the Blankenheimer Geisterzug, in which participants in white robes carry torches through the darkened alleys on Carnival Saturday.
