About the museum

The Hirtentor, also called the Hirtenturm (shepherds' tower), is the last surviving gate of Blankenheim's inner town fortifications. It is first mentioned in writing in the 16th century; a late Gothic coat-of-arms stone from 1512 is set into the outer side. The tower has been a protected monument since 1987.

Between 1919 and 1945, the tower already served as a museum: the local chapter of the Eifelverein showed a local history museum here, most of whose holdings were lost in World War II. Its successor, the Eifelmuseum, was later established elsewhere in the town.

Today the tower houses a permanent natural history exhibition designed by the Kreisverband Natur- und Umweltschutz (KNU) in the Euskirchen district. On view are specimens of native birds and trunk slices of various Eifel tree species; in addition there is information on especially protected areas in the surrounding region and on the work of the local nature conservation group.
