About the museum
Around Thalmässing in the district of Roth, archaeologists have found traces of settlement from the Neolithic to the early Middle Ages; people were already living on the Hinterer Berg near Landersdorf over 5,000 years ago. The Geschichtsdorf on the southern edge of Landersdorf translates these finds into three walk-in farmsteads that show how people lived and worked about 4,000, 2,500 and 1,200 years ago.
For each house, specific excavation findings served as the model, and it was built with archaeologically documented materials and techniques. The Stone Age house with plank walls, reed roof, oven and wooden benches is based on the well-preserved timbers from the wetland settlement of Pestenacker. The small house with wattle-and-daub walls and a straw roof goes back to findings from Untermainbach; its construction also served the experimental study of prehistoric building techniques by the Naturhistorische Gesellschaft Nürnberg. The large post-built house of a wealthy Bavarian (Bajuwarian) family follows excavations in Aschheim near Munich. A garden with emmer, spelt, einkorn, legumes and medicinal and dye plants complements the site.
The Geschichtsdorf is run by volunteers from the association Freunde der Vor- und Frühgeschichte Landersdorf. Together with the Archaeological Museum on Thalmässing's Marktplatz and the Archaeological Hiking Trail, it forms the “Fundreich Thalmässing”. The highlight of the year is the Celtic Festival on the third Sunday in September, with craft demonstrations in historical costume.
