About the museum
The Heimatkundliche Sammlung Heideck (local history collection) opened in 1986 on the first floor of the town hall on Marktplatz. It aims to bring back memories of the past and to get visitors talking with one another about local history. Over the years, parts of the collection have repeatedly been exchanged and reassembled.
Across eight rooms the museum shows tools, products and relics from everyday life in bygone times, explained through information boards, photo reproductions and labels. Main themes are town history, cooking, school, living and clothing. A small schoolroom is the greatest attraction for children; in the museum kitchen visitors learn what a Kochkiste (cooking box) and a Sparherd (economy stove) are, and painted chests, cupboards and a canopy bed from a Heideck district show the former sleeping chamber.
Clothing is also covered: in the past, it revealed which territory a person belonged to, bright and Catholic in the former Pfalz-Neuburg area around Heideck, darker and Protestant in the neighboring Brandenburg-Ansbach territory. The permanent exhibition "Stadtgeschichte(n) aus dem Boden" presents surface finds and excavation results from the town area in recent years.
