About the museum

The museum is housed in an early-19th-century townhouse that stands by the Johannesbrücke bridge on the edge of Berching's walled old town. As a Heimatmuseum (local history museum), from 1979 it displayed evidence of rural life in the western Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz), above all an extensive collection of farmhouse furniture from roughly 1700 to 1880, along with traditional costumes and household goods.

In December 2006, an exhibition on Christoph Willibald Gluck was added on the first floor. The 18th-century opera reformer came from what is now the municipality of Berching – whether from Erasbach or Weidenwang is still disputed. A multimedia presentation of about 35 minutes with many musical examples, text panels, a listening station, and a timeline places the composer's life and work in the context of his era. Today the building goes by the name Gluck-Museum; the local history collection can be seen on the second floor.
