About the museum
In the 17th century the production of leonine wire (metal-thread wire) began in Allersberg. Sybilla Maurer from Freystadt brought the necessary knowledge with her and is regarded as the savior of the Allersberg wire drawing trade. Jacob Gilardi, born in Milan in 1684, married the widow Sybilla Heckel, née Maurer, in 1708, turned the wire-drawing workshop into a factory and brought it international renown in the 18th century. For more than 300 years the company shaped the town's history; the Baroque GilardiHaus bears witness to this heyday.
The market municipality of Allersberg opened the GilardiAusstellung on June 30, 2018 in the south wing of the Gilardi estate. On about 200 square meters on the ground floor, it shows, using original pieces from the "Firma Gilardi" foundation, the beginnings of wire drawing in 1689 and above all the production of Christmas tree ornaments until 2006. A highlight is the virtual Christmas tree, which visitors can decorate with authentic Allersberg ornaments.
The house is part of the "Die Drahtzieher" (The Wire Drawers) museum network, together with the Fabrikmuseum (factory museum) Roth, the Klöppelmuseum (lace museum) Abenberg and the Museum Schloss Ratibor, which received the Bavarian Heimat Prize in 2025. The Förderverein Gilardi-Anwesen (friends' association of the Gilardi estate) supports its operation.
