About the museum
Schmidsfelden lies in the Adelegg and looks back on a glassmaking tradition of nearly three hundred years. The current glassworks was founded in 1825; mainly utility glass left the works. The annealing and cooling ovens from that time have been preserved, as have tools, pipes and molds that are strikingly similar to those used by today's glassblowers.
In 1997, the Heimatpflege Leutkirch (local heritage association) renovated the imposing glassworks and added an extension housing a glass museum with documents on glass history. From 1999, the old glass warehouse was restored; it now displays glasses, photos and records on the environmental history of the Adelegg. The workers' houses, the former administration building and the village well from 1877 were also restored.
Since 2003, Stefan Michaelis has run a glass manufactory in the works. Visitors can watch the glassmakers at work, explore the museum across two buildings and three floors, and shop in the glass shop. The craft of glassmaking is listed in the German national register of intangible cultural heritage.
