Hammerschmiede Schwabsoien
Water-powered hammer forge from 1415 in Schwabsoien with working tail hammers, a grinding mill, and a collection of tools.
About the museum
The forge in Schwabsoien is documented since 1415 and originally belonged to the monastery of St. Mang in Füssen. For its time it was a large operation in which iron was not only forged but also smelted.
After the facility had been abandoned, private individuals campaigned for its restoration from 1986. The hammer works was rebuilt true to the original, and since 1998 the hammer forge has been open to the public as a museum.
The centerpiece is three heavy tail hammers driven by a water wheel via a long shaft. Alongside them run a grinding mill, a spring hammer, and machines such as a lathe and a drill press powered by transmissions. Historic tools, products of the forge, and a documentation tell the story of the operation.
The grounds are also worth a look: a long channel of tuff stone carries the water to the wheel and turbine and feeds the forge pond, and there is also a charcoal shed (Kohlenstadel) from 1823. The hammer forge belongs to the Museumsverbund Auerbergland and lies on the Schwabsoier Mühlenweg near the springs of the Schönach.
