About the museum
The building behind the parish church of St. Matthäus was built in 1938/39 as a Catholic youth centre and was closed by the Nazis immediately after completion, because youth meeting places other than the Hitler Youth were banned. Until the 1970s the parish youth used the house; from 1991 it served as a home for resettlers and then stood empty.
In 2008 it became available, and the support association “Haus der Alfterer Geschichte” took it over in order to give the local history a permanent home. After extensive renovation, the association has been showing exhibitions since 2011, initially on rural life in Alfter. The basis of the collection is the estate of the Alfter local historian Willi Patt (1923–2008).
The house sees itself as a meeting place, event venue and place of learning. On the ground floor, exhibits on regional history are shown; in the attic, changing exhibitions deal with topics such as Alfter Castle, emigration, inns, Jewish families or the local dialect. Historic agricultural tools stand in the outdoor area. Working groups of the association deal with subjects such as wayside crosses, forced labour or the Donnerstag-Gesellschaft; a funded project recently brought audio stations, monitors and QR codes into the exhibitions.
