About the museum
In 1869 the town of Sindelfingen founded a weaving school to open new career prospects for the former linen weavers in the face of industrialization. Training focused on Jacquard fabrics and silk. The school building was erected in 1900.
Since December 2000 the house has housed the town's Webereimuseum. It shows the history of hand-weaving, through which Sindelfingen held an important position in the Kingdom of Württemberg in the 19th century, and places particular emphasis on the social situation of the weavers, who mostly combined farming with weaving. Emigration as a way out of hardship is also addressed.
The weavers specialized in high-quality Jacquard weaving and competed with the dominant machine weaving well into the 20th century. An outlook on late industrialization and the fate of the last home weavers concludes the tour. Weaving courses of the Interessengemeinschaft Handweberei still take place in the house, so historical information and practiced craft complement each other.
