About the museum
The Local History and Firearms Museum is located in the Fronveste, a prison building from 1750 in Kemnath's old town. Several cells have been preserved with parts of their historic furnishings and give an impression of the penal system of the 18th century. The museum is run by the Heimatkundlicher Arbeits- und Förderkreis Kemnath und Umgebung (HAK).
The centrepiece is the military history collection. It commemorates the first Bavarian rifle manufactory, which existed from 1689 to 1801 in the district of Fortschau, and provides an overview of the development of German firearms in the early modern period.
A second focus is archaeological finds from the Kemnath region, which prove settlement dating back more than 50,000 years. In the defence tower, a fully equipped smithy can be seen. The "Kemnath Museum Mile" also includes the Musikeum, opened in 2015, with historic mechanical musical instruments in the nearby Meisterhaus.
