About the museum

The museum is located in the so-called "Noglschmied" on Bräugasse, a house that was rebuilt after the Erbendorf town fire of 1832. A forge was operated here until the 1980s; the original forge hearth is still preserved on the ground floor.

The Free State of Bavaria renovated the building between 2018 and 2021 as part of the Förderoffensive Nordostbayern (funding initiative for northeastern Bavaria). In April 2023 the town of Erbendorf opened the museum there; it belongs to the network of museums in the Tirschenreuth district.

The permanent exhibition, on about 300 square meters, describes the coexistence of people of different origins and religions in the northern Upper Palatinate from the 1920s to the present: from the upheavals after the First World War, through exclusion and violence in the Nazi era, to displaced persons, returning soldiers, and the reception of expellees from Czechoslovakia. Personal narratives and media stations with eyewitnesses are at the center; reconstructed unfinished rooms on the upper floor convey the cramped living conditions of the postwar period.
