About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Pressath, usually called "Haus der Heimat" (House of the Homeland), occupies the former girls' school building on Kemnather Straße. Town parish priest (Stadtpfarrer) Reinwald had the building erected in 1900. Until 1939 the Armen Schulschwestern (Poor School Sisters) ran a kindergarten there; until 1973 it served as a girls' school.
The Heimatpflegebund Pressath (local heritage association), founded in 1962 by Hans Neumann, was handed the building by the town in 1977 to set up a museum. Neumann headed it until his death in 1989, the year the museum opened in its new function.
Today there are four exhibition rooms, an archive, an expellee room (Vertriebenenstube) and a lecture room. On display are religious customs of the western Upper Palatinate, works by artists from the area, crafts, everyday objects of the 19th century and, in the attic, agricultural tools. The exhibits range from the Thirty Years' War, which a wall relief depicting the siege of Pressath in 1633 recalls, to more recent times; photos document, among other things, the fates of soldiers in both World Wars as well as highlights of club and town history.
