About the museum

In Elsenz, now a district of Eppingen, tobacco was grown on a large scale until a few decades ago; numerous drying sheds and a former tobacco manufactory still recall this important sideline. The local history association spent years assembling an extensive collection on the subject. The foundation of the local history holdings is the collection of a former village priest.

As part of the Eppingen museum concept, which aims to show history at the very place where it happened, the town opened the Local History and Tobacco Museum in 2009, after the Stonemason Museum in Mühlbach, the Farming Museum in Richen and the Viticulture Room in Kleingartach. It is located in the attic and stairwell of the former town hall, a neoclassical building from 1873 that now houses the Elsenz administrative office.

The modernly staged exhibition spans from the first encounters of European seafarers with tobacco to today's smoking ban and shows the work steps from sowing to the finished product. Further objects tell of linen weaving, trades such as cooper, wheelwright and blacksmith, everyday farm life and Kraichgau traditional costumes.
