About the museum
The Thierhaupten Local History and Costume Association, founded in 1948, set up a costume room, a spinning room and a tool chamber on the initiative of Andreas Guggenberger in the property known by the house name "Bumper". For the association's 25th anniversary in 1973, the Local History and Costume Rooms were opened – the first museum in the market town of Thierhaupten.
The building on Herzog-Tassilo-Straße was rebuilt after the village fire of 1719, with the abbot of the monastery providing building materials. From 1993 the association renovated the farmhouse, in 1996 the Austragshäusl (retirement cottage) followed as a cobbler's room; a further partial renovation was completed for the museum's 50th anniversary in 2023.
The museum shows life on a medium-sized farm more than a hundred years ago: the parlour with tiled stove, the kitchen as the farmwife's working centre, bedrooms, and field and harvest tools in the attic. Life-size figures wear the richly decorated Thierhaupten costume.
