About the museum
The museum association, founded in 1904, collected objects on Rain's history over several decades; they were first stored in the damp Allerheiligenkapelle chapel. The search for a dry and permanently suitable building took around 50 years. On June 15, 1988, the town opened the local history museum in the former salt barn at the Oberen Eck.
The barn dates from the 17th century and had not been used for salt storage since the 19th century; it later served, among other things, as a Freibank (public meat stall), a storehouse for the public works yard and a prop store for the fire brigade.
The permanent exhibition is spread over two floors. On the first floor, everyday life is the focus, with traditional costumes, housework, middle-class households, crafts, trade and farming, as well as public life with the founding of the town, the civic guard, marksmen's guilds and the courts; the main highlight is a large tin-figure diorama of the Battle of Rain in 1632. The second floor is devoted to religion, popular piety and school history. In addition, special exhibitions that change every year are shown.
