About the museum
The Heimathaus on Klosterstraße is a townsman’s farmhouse that Friederich Helleweg had built in 1645. In its long history it once housed the Rietberg grammar school. In the 19th century the Lüning family acquired the building for carts, livestock and goods, so that it became known as “Lünings Scheune” (Lüning’s barn). Alterations from this period changed the character of the house; the barn in the garden was built in 1899. Between 1945 and 1948 a large consignment of matches was even stored here.
Around 1960 the town of Rietberg bought the property from the Rieländer family. From 1983 the Heimatverein worked to convert the house into a Heimathaus, and it was officially inaugurated in 1989. Today it serves the association, with its almost 700 members, as a place for meetings and get-togethers. The cottage garden with its old well is looked after by the association.
The upper floor houses the permanent exhibition “Maße und Gewichte” (Weights and Measures): a private collection of more than 1,000 weights, measuring vessels and scales from around the world, put together by the collector Frank Junge. In addition, the Heimatverein shows changing exhibitions on regional history and culture in the house, and weaving courses and other group activities take place there. During the season, weaving demonstrations are given to the public on Sundays.
