Heimathaus Vorst
Local heritage house of the Heimatverein Vorst in Tönisvorst with a historic shoemaker's workshop, local history, an archive, and changing shop-window exhibitions.
About the museum
The Heimatverein Vorst grew out of a circle of friends of the local dialect, "Vöörschter Platt", who first met in 1978; the formal founding followed in 1979. In addition to preserving the dialect, the association is dedicated to the customs and local history of Vorst, today a district of Tönisvorst on the Lower Rhine.
On November 10, 2002, the association opened its Heimathaus (local heritage house) in a former shop on Kuhstraße, provided by the city of Tönisvorst. Volunteers had previously renovated the building extensively. The first exhibition was devoted to the hundredth anniversary of the local Martinskomitee.
The permanent display is the complete workshop of the Vorst shoemaker Matthias Koenen. On the upper floor, objects and pictures, including portraits of former pastors, recall the history of the town; dialect evenings are also held here. The shop window is regularly decorated with small themed exhibitions, often together with Vorst clubs. The association also maintains an archive with thousands of photos, newspaper clippings since 1980, funeral memorial cards, and local history booklets.
