About the museum

The Viersen district opened the Niederrheinisches Freilichtmuseum in 1973 in Grefrath on the edge of the Schwalm-Nette Nature Park. The aim was to preserve the rural living, working and craft culture of the central Lower Rhine before the last remnants disappeared. At the center of the grounds is the Dorenburg, a noble residence first mentioned in 1326 that received its two-wing form in the 17th century; it has been a protected monument since 1991.

Around the castle, a good twenty buildings from the region were rebuilt on about four and a half hectares: combined house-and-stable buildings from Viersen-Hagen, Mönchengladbach-Rasseln and Waldniel, a gate barn from St. Tönis, a bakehouse from Willich, a cottage from Wankum, and commercial buildings such as a tannery from Moers, a sawmill from Hinsbeck, a grain distillery and a reconstructed fire engine house. Gardens, orchard meadows, pollarded willows and animals such as draft horses and poultry complete the picture of a Lower Rhine village.

A special feature is the toy museum in the castle's former farm building. On three floors it shows toys from several centuries, with the objects provided by a foundation for toy and childhood research; on the top floor, large model railway layouts run several times a day. On the upper floor of the Dorenburg, folk-culture special exhibitions change. The museum is also known for annual events such as the tractor meeting in September and the Christmas market in Advent.
