About the museum
The Heimatverein Oedt was formed in December 1947 on the initiative of the local cultural committee. In its 1953 statutes it set itself the goals, among others, of building a local history museum with a picture archive, local archive and library, researching the history of the village, and excavating and restoring Burg Uda. Many finds come from the excavation at the castle in 1961.
In 1989 the museum received a new home in the vaulted cellar of Villa Girmes. The listed building was erected in 1896 as the residence of the textile manufacturer Dietrich Girmes, later served as the mayor’s office and is now used as an annex of Grefrath Town Hall. After the villa was renovated, the more than 7,000 exhibits were rearranged.
The exhibition is spread over five rooms with eleven thematic areas: administration and social institutions of the former municipality with a model of the village based on the 1825 land register, military service and war victims, early history from the Stone Age to the Franks, the Mooren family and club life, the defining textile industry with the Girmes works, and the history of the parish church of St. Vitus.
