Anniversary show of the Grevenbroich artist-run gallery: 15 artists use photography, painting, objects, and text and audio installations to ask where hope can be found in uncertain times.
About the museum
The gallery is housed in the so-called white villa, built as a residence in 1868 by architect Friedrich Wilhelm Scheidt. Its first occupant was the music-loving Kommerzienrat (commercial councilor) Gustav Adolf Schmidt, who had the house and garden further embellished. Later the building belonged to the Kaiser's Kaffee company complex; at times it also housed a savings bank and school classes. The villa survived both world wars undamaged.
In 1973 the house passed to the town of Viersen, and in 1976 it was listed as a historic monument. After renovation, the Städtische Galerie im Park moved in in December 1981. Since then, it has shown six to seven changing exhibitions a year across around 265 square meters in seven rooms on two levels – ranging from renowned artists and regional positions to school projects.
One focus is art in public space: since 1989, on the initiative of the Viersen local history society, a sculpture collection has grown around the villa with works by Tony Cragg, Erwin Heerich, Mark di Suvero, Günter Haese, and others, freely accessible in the park at all times; a work by Sabine Hornig was added in 2026. The gallery also looks after the town's print collection (Graphische Sammlung) of around 1,500 sheets from the Renaissance to the present, including works by Dürer, Rembrandt, Rubens, Picasso, Chagall, and the Expressionists, as well as 40 photographs by August Sander.
